Karma, a blind elephant, is just one of the 4,000 elephants living in captivity in India.
Sadly, these magnificent creatures often suffer from poor living conditions, which can lead to premature death from exhaustion and infections.

Life expectancy for captive elephants has dropped from 70-75 years to below 40.
Suparna Ganguly, president of the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, points out that a lack of knowledge among keepers and managers contributes to the elephants’ suffering.
Issues include inadequate shelter, improper diet, and overwork, all of which can cause health problems and even death.
Karma spent the first 46 years of her life enduring such conditions, serving as a prop for begging and carrying heavy loads on busy streets.
Fortunately, Wildlife SOS intervened, rescuing her in January and bringing her to the Elephant Care and Conservation Centre in northern India.
There, she will be cared for by dedicated staff and receive the proper care she needs for a happier life.
A fundraiser for Karma’s needs has already raised hundreds of dollars as she continues her physical and emotional healing journey.
