Following production delays caused by last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike, Mission: Impossible 8 recently restarted filming in the U.K., where Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning was also shot. Much of Dead Reckoning was filmed in Derbyshire and the Peak District, including the much-talked-about train crash into a nearby quarry during one of the movie’s more dramatic scenes.

Tom Cruise Returns as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 8

Cruise reprises his role as IMF operative leader Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 8, which is expected to pick up from the events of Dead Reckoning, which saw Hunt battle the nefarious Gabriel (Esai Morales) and the AI-powered villain he worked for, the Entity. The upcoming sequel was initially titled Dead Reckoning Part Two and was set to be released this June by Paramount Pictures. However, the strike-related delays and a change in creative course led Mission: Impossible 8 to drop the Dead Reckoning title, as well as pushing back the release window. Additionally, Dead Reckoning Part One was simply renamed Dead Reckoning as it made its streaming debut on Paramount+.

Despite being regarded as one of the best Mission: Impossible movies ever made by critics and audiences, Dead Reckoning lost money for Paramount despite earning $567.5 million worldwide at the box office. Dead Reckoning, which boasts a 96% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earned two Academy Award nominations, a Golden Globe nod, a Screen Actors Guild Award victory and a Saturn Award win.

Mission: Impossible 8 will see Cruise feature alongside Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, Hannah Waddingham and Hayley Atwell. Director Christopher McQuarrie has admitted that he and Cruise have been trying to figure out a definitive ending to the upcoming follow-up. McQuarrie has also strongly hinted that Mission: Impossible 8 won’t be the last film in the eponymous franchise.
