Within the Earth’s core is a “New World”
For more than half a century, scientists thought that the Earth’s inner core was a solid, compressed iron alloy sphere surrounded by a liquid outer core. But a new study suggests it’s a “New World.”
The Earth’s inner core, the innermost part of the planet’s layer, is understood to be a sphere composed mainly of iron and nickel, about 1,220 km in diameter. They are located about 5,150 km below the Earth’s surface and are responsible for generating the planet’s magnetic field.
Since the 1950s, scientists have believed that the Earth’s inner core is solid and surrounded by a layer of liquid metal.
Recently, by measuring large vibrations, scientists were able to reconstruct a picture of the planet’s inner workings in a way similar to a CT scan. And new research has shown that this “solid” core may be much softer than previously thought.
“An Underworld” Inside the Earth
Rhett Butler, a geophysicist at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Science in Hawaii, USA, looks at how seismic waves generated by large earthquakes at five different locations travel through the Earth’s core.

In this way, he discovered that scientists had misunderstood the internal structure of the Earth’s core.
Dr Butler said: “In sharp contrast to the homogeneous soft iron alloys considered in all Earth models with an inner core since 1970, our model shows a gap of 241 km of the core of the Earth. This raises new assumptions about Earth’s composition, thermal history, and evolution.”
This research could revolutionize our understanding of the Earth’s magnetic field. While the outer spinning liquid core drives our planet’s magnetic field, the inner core helps regulate the magnetic field.
According to NASA research, other planets, such as Mars, have liquid centers but lack inner cores and magnetic fields. As a result, Butler believes, a deeper understanding of the inner core will help scientists understand the relationship between the planet’s interior and the activity of its magnetic field. Source
