Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost’s love story is the sweetest.

The couple have been romantically linked since 2017, but their first encounter was back in 2006 on the set of Saturday Night Live — Johansson was hosting an episode of the comedy show and Jost was in the writer’s room.

After dating for three years, Jost and the Lucy star tied the knot in October 2020. Johansson was previously married to actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011 and to French journalist and art dealer Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017.

“I didn’t know what I wanted or needed from somebody else. I think identifying those things was a game-changer for me,” she said on the Goop podcast in April 2023, adding that her relationship with Jost has been successful because they “move around the world in the same way.”

In 2021, Johansson and the comedian welcomed their son, Cosmo. The actress is also mom to daughter Rose Dorothy, whom she shares with Dauriac.

From their initial interaction to their intimate wedding, here’s everything to know about Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost’s relationship.

As it turns out, Johansson and Jost go way back!

In September 2017, the SNL writer opened up about how the pair — who had not yet confirmed that they were dating — first met in 2006.

“The first time she hosted was the first year I was a writer on the show,” Jost revealed. “So, we’ve kind of known each other since then … she’s the best.”

Johansson’s first time hosting the comedy program was in 2006. She went on to host the show five additional times, most recently in December 2019.

Although the couple had known each other for years, they didn’t become romantically linked until May 2017, when the movie star made a special guest appearance on SNL‘s season finale.

After the show, the two shared a warm hug on stage during the customary goodnights and later hit up the afterparty where they were reportedly seen kissing, according to Page Six.

Jost declined to comment on the relationship rumors at the time, telling PEOPLE that he didn’t really listen to talk about his private life. “I don’t really pay attention to it, I just kinda keep doing my life as much as I can. It’s nice to have some time off now and just get to relax.”

Just a month earlier, Johansson had filed for divorce from French journalist Romain Dauriac, with whom she shares daughter Rose Dorothy.

Amid continued dating rumors as the couple was spotted holding hands and sharing a passionate kiss, Jost opened up about his romance with the Marvel star in September 2017.

“She’s pretty cool … it’s hard to have a lot of complaints, she’s pretty awesome,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the 2017 Emmy Awards. “I’m very happy. I feel very lucky.”

That same month, Johansson and her ex-husband finalized their divorce and settled their custody dispute over their daughter.

After months of keeping their romance low-key, the pair made their public debut as a couple at the American Museum of Natural History Gala in New York City in November 2017.

Though they both walked the red carpet separately, the actress was all smiles as the couple posed for photos together inside the soirée.

“They’re very much in love. It’s serious,” a friend of Jost’s told PEOPLE at the time. “They’re both very respectful of each other’s careers and very supportive. They’re super cute together.”

Another source close to the couple echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Scarlett likes to be in love and has not changed a bit in that area, Colin is good for her because she likes smart men, especially writer types. She is a very bright girl and always searching for that perfect match.”

While the actual SNL episode was hosted by Kevin Hart, Johansson made a surprise guest appearance in the cold open as Ivanka Trump, whom she had previously portrayed during a mock ad for a perfume called “Complicit.”

During the goodbye section of the episode, the happy couple wasn’t afraid to show PDA as Jost warmly wrapped his arm around the actress’ shoulder.

Michael Che, Jost’s co-host on SNL‘s “Weekend Update,” also shared a video of the sweet moment on his Instagram story, which featured the couple smiling as they held hands while skating around the rink. “murrrrr xmas!!,” Che wrote alongside the video.

The couple attended the prestigious fashion event dressed to the nines in May 2018. This marked just one of the many events the duo attended together that year.

A month prior, Johansson and Jost made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Avengers: Infinity War premiere, followed by the Emmy Awards in September 2018, which Jost co-hosted with Che.

After two years of dating (and over a decade of knowing each other), Johansson and Jost got engaged in May 2019. The actress’ publicist Marcel Pariseau confirmed the news to the Associated Press, although no nuptials were planned during the time of the announcement.

A month later, Johansson began wearing an 11-carat engagement ring that’s “estimated to be worth $450,000,” according to Insider.

In December of that year, Johansson hosted SNL for the sixth time, and shared a sweet sentiment about her new fiancé, saying, “This place means so much to me. I have so many friends here and I met the love of my life here,” concluding with an adorable hug and kiss.

Johansson and Jost wed in an intimate ceremony amid the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping it small with close friends and family. The Instagram account for Meals on Wheels America announced the news on Oct. 29, 2020.

“We’re thrilled to break the news that Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost were married over the weekend in an intimate ceremony with their immediate family and love ones, following COVID-19 safety precautions as directed by the CDC. Their wedding wish is to help make a difference for vulnerable older adults during this difficult time by supporting @mealsonwheelsamerica. Please consider donating to celebrate the happy couple by clicking the link in our bio,” the post read.

Johansson and Jost kept the news that they were expecting fairly low-key, although the comedian briefly mentioned it during one of his SNL skits prior. Jost announced the arrival of their baby on his Instagram account, writing “Ok ok, we had a baby… His name is Cosmo.”

A source exclusively told PEOPLE later that month, “Colin is considerate and helpful in everyday life so adding one more to the mix should be fine,” the source adds. “The baby is the best thing ever for both of them.”

Johansson and Jost left baby Cosmo at home when they made their first red carpet appearance in two years at the 35th Annual American Cinematheque Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Johansson was the recipient of the evening’s American Cinematheque Award.

“I feel very fortunate that I’ve been able to take this time to really enjoy the early stages of my motherhood with our son,” Johansson told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s been wonderful. I’m in a ‘baby bliss bubble.'”

Amazon

One week before Super Bowl LVI, Amazon released its big game commercial for Alexa, featuring Johansson and Jost. In the commercial, the couple discovers their Alexa device can read their minds, and much hilarity ensues when Alexa spills embarrassing secrets to the couple.

Claudine Cheever, vice president of global brand and fixed marketing for Amazon, told Variety that the duo was perfect for the commercial. “Celebrities work well for us when they will poke fun at themselves and are willing to have fun with themselves rather than just show up and be themselves,” said Cheever. “It’s something we are always thinking about when we are casting.”

An Instagram post on The Outset, Johansson’s new skincare line, featured a black-and-white photo of Johansson’s side profile from the bridge of her nose to the top of her chin. Jost commented on the post, writing, “Is this the best way to contact you? I’m starting a similar brand called ‘Part of a Face’ and would love to use this photo. Thanks.”

However, in March 2022, Johansson got the last laugh in an interview with InStyle. She revealed that her husband served as a product tester for The Outset and thought he was having an allergic reaction to a face mask when he didn’t realize it was self-warming. “He was like, ‘It’s spread, and it’s melting off my face!'” Johansson said. “He was completely freaking out.”

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2022, Johansson made fun of her husband’s 1990s high school yearbook photo of Jost sporting a then-trendy bowl cut.

Johansson joked about how bad she thought the haircut looked, adding that she didn’t think she would’ve dated Jost in high school.

“Firstly, my brother had that same haircut … both of my brothers and I just can’t,” she said. “There’s no way. I mean, who decided on that cut as a stylish thing? What hairdresser was like, ‘I’ll try this.'”

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Johansson joked that she and Jost “just threw a bunch of letters together” to name their son.

“It just seemed like a refreshing — it’s so charming. Our friends all liked it,” the Black Widow star said of the name.

Clarkson pointed out that both of Johansson’s kids — Rose and Cosmo — are named after flowers.

“They are both flowers,” Johansson said. “Not a lot of people make that connection. Cosmo is a really sweet little flower that comes in different shades of orange and yellow.”

Jost appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where host Seth Meyers asked if he has any fears about parenting Cosmo. “I think when you have a decent imagination, it’s worse,” Jost responded. “You don’t have rational fears, you have creative fears.”

Jost went on to say that his “number one fear” for what could happen to his son is “eagles.”

The SNL star explained that the bald eagle population is thriving and said that “competition for food” could lead the eagles to snatch a baby. “We go for walks and I’m scanning the horizon. I’m on eagle watch,” Jost said. “And then we go for a walk, and she’s got Cosmo in the stroller, and Scarlett puts a little hat on his head that has mouse ears on the hat. And I’m like, ‘You’re dressing our baby like food.’ ”

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Johansson and Drew Barrymore discussed Jost’s high school haircut, referencing a black-and-white throwback photo of the comedian.

When asked if she would have “been into” Jost back in high school, the Black Widow star admitted, “I don’t think so.”

“Firstly, my brother had that same haircut … both of my brothers and I just can’t,” the actress explained. “There’s no way. I mean, who decided on that cut as a stylish thing? What hairdresser was like ‘I’ll try this.’ “

During an appearance on the Goop podcast, Johansson opened up about her marriage to Jost. She explained to host Gwyneth Paltrow that their relationship has been so successful because they “move around the world in the same way.”

Johansson added: “I never realized, ‘Oh, it’s really important for me, I need to be with a compassionate person. That’s a fundamental characteristic that has to be there.’ It worked with Colin and I because I was finally able to step back and respect myself enough to know what those [fundamental wants and needs] were.”

Jost accompanied Johansson to the premiere of her film Asteroid City at the Cannes Film Festival. The Saturday Night Live star donned a tuxedo on the red carpet, while Johansson dazzled in a pink gown and a vibrant red lip.

The following month, Johansson recalled how it was “so fun” to have her husband join her at the event. “It’s awesome. I mean, personally, it’s always fun when you’re not just explaining it to them over the phone, but you’re living your life together, these big profound moments,” she told PEOPLE.

In a video for her skincare brand, The Outset, Johansson gave Jost a “spa-like” facial while they answered holiday-related questions from fans.

“My favorite holiday memory is when we told our daughter that we were having our son,” the actress shared. “We did it by giving her a little ornament that was the mama bear and the papa bear and the baby bear and then there was a little arrow pointing to the mama bear’s stomach.”

Jost jokingly added, “That was very cute, but then she was so disappointed when it was a human.”
