TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS NEWS: LEAFS ACQUIRE A NEW STAR CENTER IN EXCHANGE FOR SUCCESS WITH THE BLUES?
Something big is happening in Toronto, and it could completely reshape the Maple Leafs’ season. With the trade deadline fast approaching, the team faces a major challenge after defenseman Chris Tanev was placed on injured reserve following an upper-body injury suffered against the Boston Bruins. The timing couldn’t be worse, as Toronto is in the midst of a crucial playoff push.
Chris Tanev’s Absence: A Major Blow to the Leafs

Tanev’s injury occurred in the first period of a physical battle against the Bruins when he was violently checked into the boards by John Beecher. The veteran defenseman was seen leaving the arena with his right arm in a sling, raising concerns about his availability for the rest of the season. While the team has only listed him as “day-to-day,” his absence leaves a noticeable void in the Leafs’ defensive lineup.
At 35 years old, Tanev has been a rock on the blue line, tallying two goals and 15 assists in 57 games. His veteran presence is invaluable, particularly as the playoffs draw near. Losing him at this stage could force Toronto to rethink its strategy before the trade deadline.
Connor Dewar Activated, But Is He the Answer?
In response to Tanev’s absence, the Maple Leafs have activated forward Connor Dewar from injured reserve. However, Dewar is not exactly an offensive force, with zero goals and only three assists in 29 games this season. While his energy and defensive contributions are appreciated, they might not be enough to compensate for the team’s growing needs. Head coach Sheldon Keefe will need to explore additional solutions to keep the Leafs competitive in the Atlantic Division race.
Brayden Schenn: The Missing Piece for Toronto?
With Tanev sidelined and the trade deadline looming, Toronto’s front office is eyeing reinforcements, particularly at the center position. According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Leafs have expressed strong interest in acquiring Brayden Schenn from the St. Louis Blues.
Schenn is a battle-tested veteran and a Stanley Cup champion with the Blues in 2019. His leadership and two-way play would bring much-needed stability to Toronto’s center depth, an area of concern since William Nylander’s preseason experiment at the position failed. More importantly, Schenn has a strong relationship with Leafs’ current head coach Craig Berube, who openly admires him.
“He’s an amazing guy, a true competitor. Players who reach 1,000 games in the NHL do everything right on and off the ice,” Berube recently said about Schenn.
This connection could give Toronto an edge in trade negotiations. However, they are not the only suitors—Vegas Golden Knights have also shown interest, which might drive up Schenn’s price. The 32-year-old forward has three more years remaining on his contract at $6.5 million per season and holds a no-trade clause, meaning he has control over his destination. If he prioritizes reuniting with Berube and contending for another Stanley Cup, the Leafs could have the advantage.
Internal Options: Can Toronto Find Solutions Within?
If Toronto fails to land Schenn, the team will have to look internally for answers. The third-line center role has been a revolving door, with Max Domi and Fraser Minten struggling to lock down the position. Now, another potential solution is emerging—Calle Jarnkrok.
The Swedish forward has yet to play this season due to sports hernia surgery but is nearing a return. He is expected to be back in action for the upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. While Jarnkrok may not be the high-profile reinforcement fans are hoping for, his return could provide a temporary boost to Toronto’s depth.
A Crucial Decision for the Leafs’ Playoff Hopes
As of now, the Maple Leafs sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with 76 points in 59 games, just one point behind the Florida Panthers. Every move made in the coming days could shape the team’s playoff destiny.
Would Brayden Schenn be the ideal piece to strengthen the Leafs’ roster? Should Toronto make another major move before the trade deadline?
