Despite Patrick Mahomes being on the verge of winning his third Super Bowl in six seasons as a starter for the Kansas City Chiefs, he hasn’t impressed his father enough as he still ranks Tom Brady and Joe Montana above his son.
Mahomes Sr. did, however, admit that his son is on the right trajectory to meet them in the conversation of all-time greats throughout NFL history and he could take another step in that direction if he beats the San Francisco 49ers on February 11.
“That’s still to be determined.” Mahomes Sr. said. “He still has a ways to go.
“I have mad respect for Tom Brady and grew up as a Joe Montana fan. [Patrick] is on the right trajectory, but right now, I would still say those guys are better.”
Brady won seven Super Bowls across his career. Six of them came with Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots dynasty before he added an extra one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
Whilst Montana won four Super Bowls with the 49ers between 1981 and 1990, including being voted as the MVP in the NFL‘s final game on three separate occasions.
How do they compare at 28?
At the age of 28, Mahomes has two Super Bowls to his name (2019, 2023) and is poised to add a third unless Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy can stop him.
At the age of 28, Montana had won two rings. He claimed his second ring in 1984, the same year that he turned 28, showing that Mahomes is currently on the same path to stardom as Montana was.
Brady, at the same age, had won three Super Bowls. So it’s possible for Mahomes to draw level with the man that many consider to be the NFL’s best player of all time, although it’s worth noting that a lot of Brady‘s legacy lies in his longevity.
Mahomes has only missed two games in his time as a starter so he definitely is healthy enough to keep playing, but whether he reactions and quality holds up is a different question.
