Number Icon: Gabriel Magalhaes Shares Inspiration for Choosing No. 6 Jersey at Arsenal, Following in Tony Adams’ Legendary Path

Gabriel Magalhaes, the latest signing for Arsenal, will don the No. 6 shirt in honor of the late Tony Adams.

He is still two jersey numbers away from his favorite, No. 4, since William Saliba, another recent newcomer, already has it.

Other notable figures in the club’s history who have worn the No. 6 shirt are David Rocastle, Martin Keown, and Laurent Koscielny.

Last night, the Gunners advertised on their website how to get the “Gabriel 6” shirt.

However, Magalhaes, who looks up to Neymar and attended the same academy as Eden Hazard and Nicolas Pepe, disclosed that conversations with Edu—who wore Arsenal’s 17—were what ultimately persuaded him to sign.

“[Edu and I] had several chats about Arsenal and the new project, we had many good conversations,” the 22-year-old Brazilian defender said to arsenal.com.

“As the days passed, I was growing more and more enthusiastic about it. Then, the coach called, which gave me great comfort.

“It really inspires you when the coach calls to let you know he wants you on the team. That’s the main reason I’m here right now.

“We didn’t discuss [details]; he simply informed me of my abilities, potential, and limits. He promised to be very demanding with me as well.

“I know he is a great coach and I will make progress with his help.”

Magalhaes also disclosed that a major factor in his choice was the deluge of messages he received on social media.

“So many fans were messaging me and asking me to join Arsenal, and that played a big part in my decision to sign with this club,” he continued.

“I enjoy being here, and I am familiar with the club’s history and customs. I’m overjoyed and want to win a lot of trophies while wearing the Arsenal shirt.

“It was an extremely bizarre experience, since several other teams made offers to me.

“As I mentioned, the team project for the next several years and the club’s history and traditions were highly motivating for my decision to join here. I spoke with my family, my agents, and some of Lille’s directors.

“So here I am, wearing the Arsenal shirt, I will give my best for it and come on you Gunners!”
