Miraculous Intervention: SWT/KWS Rescue Team Safeguards an Elephant from Poacher’s Poison, a Testament to Compassion

In the heart of Tsavo East National Park’s Tsavo Triangle, a remarkable rescue unfolded when the SWT/KWS Canine Unit encountered a dejected bull elephant beneath a towering tree in January 2020.

What initially appeared as a moment of solitude turned distressing as the team discovered a sizable abscess on the elephant’s abdomen, a grim result of a heartless poacher’s poisoned arrow.

Despite the late hour and the unavailability of Dr. Poghon from the SWT/KWS Vet, a swift response plan was set in motion.

The SWT/KWS Sky Vet Unit was called in for assistance the next day.

The evening prior, the SWT Super Cub conducted a patrol to monitor the bull’s location, ensuring a seamless operation at dawn.

Dr. Domnic Mijele, from the SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Vet Unit, was flown down from Nanyuki to administer treatment the following morning.

At dawn, the Super Cub located the bull, now accompanied by another. The decision to transport Dr. Mijele to Kaluku field headquarters was made, with all necessary equipment prepared.

Additional support, including straps, water, and a four-wheel drive vehicle, was on standby if the bull needed repositioning post-procedure.

The operation, facilitated by a helicopter provided by the Trust, proceeded smoothly. Surprisingly, the elephant was tranquilized from the air, walking towards the ground team before collapsing.

With the vehicle’s assistance, the team rolled him over for Dr. Mijele to address the infected wound.

Although not deep enough to puncture the gut wall, the poison-induced infection posed a severe threat.

The veterinarian cleaned the wound and administered antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Upon revival, the majestic creature walked away into the bush, displaying a regal presence, thanks to timely treatment and generous financial support from Sky Vet.

This successful intervention marks a testament to the dedication of wildlife rescue teams, ensuring the survival of these noble creatures against the relentless dangers posed by poachers.
