Rodriguez revealed that Universal Pictures responded to her concerns two years ago by bringing a female writer on board, preventing her from having to bid farewell to the beloved franchise.

The Machete Kills star confidently announced at the event in England that she would be taking on the ninth project, after Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley agreed that a female perspective was needed in the writers’ room. Rodriguez expressed her frustration with the lack of female representation in the franchise, stating that she found it annoying to have her character filtered through only male voices. She emphasized the importance of having a female voice present to truly capture the essence of her character.

“I can count on my fingers how many times I’ve had a conversation with my female co-stars,” she revealed. “It’s disheartening. For example, Jordana, who played my on-screen sister. After 16 years in the franchise, I can still count the times we’ve actually talked on screen, and that’s just sad.
“I insisted that if I come back, there should be a female writer to help bring a female perspective, and finally, they listened and made it happen.”
Fast & Furious 9 is expected to hit theaters on May 22, 2020, while the next spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, is set for release on August 2, 2019.
