After making a touchdown pass that won the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes explains, “It was just all emotion.”

“It’s a moment that I’ll never forget,” said the three-time Super Bowl MVP recipient

Patrick Mahomes shared what was running through his head at the end of the 2024 Super Bowl.

During Tuesday’s episode of Good Morning America, the 28-year-old quarterback explained why he fell to the ground after throwing the winning touchdown to Mecole Hardman.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers was sealed by Mahomes’ game-winning play. During overtime, the 49ers scored a field goal to go up 3 points over the Chiefs, but Mahomes answered with the game-winning touchdown in the final minutes of Super Bowl LVIII.

Mahomes explained to GMA co-host William Reeve that the team “prepares for those moments.”

“The only time I feel like I was a little nervous was maybe that fourth down play,” revealed Mahomes. “I knew I’d have to go up there and get it.”

As for how he felt after the play, Mahomes shared, “It was just all emotion; all emotion, man.”

“I was running, and I didn’t know where to go, and I had to lay down somewhere, so I did a tumble on the ground,” said the quarterback. “It’s a moment that I’ll never forget.”

The three-time Super Bowl champion added that he’s striving to land more championship titles.

“I mean obviously we’ve had a great start and a great run, and we’ve done a lot of great things, but we’ve got a long ways to go,” Mahomes said. “And so I think if I have the mindset to continue to get better every single day I’m playing.”

Following the team’s third win in four years, Mahomes became the first back-to-back Super Bowl MVP since Terry Bradshaw won it twice, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to consecutive wins in Super Bowl XIII and XIV in 1979 and 1980. Green Bay Packers legend Bart Starr also received the MVP title after Super Bowl I and II in 1968 and 1969, according to ESPN.

He’s also the third player ever to win three or more Super Bowl MVP trophies — following Tom Brady’s five wins and San Francisco 49ers Joe Montana’s three wins, per ESPN.

After the game, Mahomes and the team discussed the win on stage. He was asked how he kept his cool to score the winning touchdown and called the last drive “a microcosm” of their season.

The quarterback praised his team’s defense for “keeping us in there,” and “of course, Harrison Butker,” who tied the game with a field goal to go to overtime.
