A Majestic Migration: Ukame, Wanjala, and Galla’s Unforgettable Journey from Nairobi to Ithumba

In a momentous event, three young elephants—Ukame, Wanjala, and Galla—embarked on a transformative journey from the Nairobi Nursery to their new abode in Ithumba.

Mildly tranquilized for a smoother transition, these gentle giants added a touch of drama during the loading process.

Ukame, the eldest and largest, required extra encouragement, eventually stepping into the rightmost compartment with the help of a guiding strap.

Galla and Wanjala, the two boys, followed suit, needing assistance and waist straps to enter the truck.

Enticed by a milk bottle, Galla found his place in the middle compartment. Once loaded, the trio settled comfortably, relishing milk and greens.

The journey commenced at 3.30 am, heading towards Ithumba. At 7.30 am, a mechanical glitch—a burst airbag spring—disrupted the travel in Kyadula. Swift repairs were crucial to prevent the elephants from overheating.

Despite the Sunday breakdown challenge, spare parts were flown in, and a repair team reached the stranded vehicle.

The elephants stayed calm, enjoying refreshments, and after a three-hour delay, the journey resumed at 11.15 am.

By 12.40 pm, the convoy reached Ithumba, where dependent orphans and semi-independent herds warmly welcomed Ukame, Wanjala, and Galla.

As dawn broke the next day, Yatta, Wendi, and Kinna’s herd, along with their babies and nannies, joined the scene.

The ex-orphans trumpeted and rumbled in an overwhelming welcome. The trio—Ukame, Wanjala, and Galla—quickly adapted, finding comfort within their new family.

Ithumba, a pristine haven free from human interference, unveiled its magic—a homecoming for these young elephants, returning to a landscape reminiscent of their origins in Tsavo.

Surrounded by large herds, the trio embarked on a new chapter, forging connections and rediscovering the essence of their elephant heritage.
