“No, f—k that”: Kevin Smith Wanted Tom Cruise to Play a Marvel Role That Would’ve Earned ‘A Billion Dollars’ and That’s Not Iron Man

Kevin Smith, a producer, screenwriter, and comic book writer among many others has commented on his show that Tom Cruise would have been the perfect Wolverine since Marvel was bringing back the character. He even made a bold statement that Cruise would be a much better Wolverine than Hugh Jackman even making a billion dollars in the process.

Although Hollywood has never seen Tom Cruise as a superhero or even in a superhero movie, many are highly excited about the fact that even Smith is supporting the matter. While many of his fans want to see him in the costume, Cruise is currently very busy with his reinvented Mission: Impossible franchise that has already released a movie with another scheduled for 2025.

Kevin Smith Pictures Tom Cruise as a Billion-Dollar Wolverine

Filmmaker Kevin Smith, a major comic book fan, when proposed during a podcast on the Kevin Smith show via YouTube that giving Tom Cruise as Wolverine in the MCU would have been fire and possibly considerably more effective than the then-ongoing franchise. He accepted Cruise’s film experience, and star power would be ideally suited for the person, potentially even bringing in a billion dollars at the box office.

Kevin Smith: “What’s he going to do next? Next movie they’re going to be like ‘Cruise fights a shark!’. My only downside for the next two Mission: Impossible movies is it sounds like he’s going to be busy then and I look forward to them bringing him into the comic book world. Like, I think he’s ripe for a Marvel takeover.”

Marc Bernardin: “He would be a really good Stryker for when they reboot the X-Men over at Marvel.”

Smith: “No, fuck that, make him Wolverine.”

Bernardin: “He’s older than the one they just replaced!”

Kevin Smith: “I don’t give a shit, dude, Tom Cruise as Wolverine makes a billion dollars.”

Smith contended that Cruise’s devotion to stunts would make Wolverine’s battles reasonable and merciless, while his sensational acting reach could catch the person’s inner turmoil. Even though Hugh Jackman was the go-to Wolverine at that point, Smith’s view features the fervor encompassing both Cruise and the iconic mutant. His opinion was also upheld by a larger number of people, mostly his fans who also wanted to see him in a superhuman film.

Interestingly, Cruise was considered for Iron Man early on in the MCU, but scheduling conflicts and creative differences led to Robert Downey Jr. being cast. With the X-Men now joining the MCU, the possibility of a new Wolverine remains open, but whether it’ll be Cruise or someone else is anyone’s guess. Nonetheless, Smith’s casting suggestion sparks a fun discussion about Cruise’s versatility and the future of Wolverine in the ever-expanding Marvel universe.
