Jimmy Connors thinks Novak Djokovic might have something “up his sleeve” for the US Open and the American tennis icon is warning the rest of the ATP Tour that the Serb’s “guts” could be on full display at Flushing Meadows.
So far this year, Djokovic has had three semifinals in as many Grand Slams played. While the Serb was forced to retire against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open, he fully played out his semifinals at the French Open and Wimbledon, and got bounced by Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
Djokovic, who was also beaten by Sinner in the 2024 Australian Open semifinal and fell short to Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s Wimbledon final, has been evidently left behind the Italian and the Spaniard in Grand Slam title contention. While the 38-year-old is still there and capable of making a deep Major run, he just doesn’t have an answer when it comes to solving the Sinner or Alcaraz puzzle.
And while Sinner and Alcaraz are already widely regarded as the top top favorites for the title in New York, Connors is warning that writing Djokovic off could be a major mistake.
Connors backs Djokovic to make a big US Open run
“I am not counting him out yet. When you have got guts, you have got guts. And sometimes those guts are going to come out,” the American tennis legend said on the Advantage Connors podcast.
Also, Connors suggests that the record 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will be on a mission to prove that he can still do it.
“I got a feeling that as much as he would have liked to have won Wimbledon, that result in the semi, he didn’t like that. Losing three straight sets like that. He is not used to that, that’s not him, that’s not his game. So believe me, the guy can come up with something up his sleeve for the US Open, which might just surprise a lot of people and you know what, I would love to see it,” the 72-year-old added.
Meanwhile, Djokovic was very honest after his Wimbledon exit as he admitted that playing five-set matches at this stage of his career wasn’t easy, especially against the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz.
