Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic withdraw from US Open warm-up event due to Wimbledon injuries – ‘I have to prioritise my health’ jiji

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner spoke of his disappointment after he joined Novak Djokovic in being forced to withdraw from the Canadian Open.

The tournament in Toronto would have been the Italian’s first competitive appearance since his triumph over Carlos Alcaraz in the final of Wimbledon.

Sinner stormed to his first triumph in SW19, battling back from a set down to avenge his defeat against Alcaraz in the French Open final.

However, he will not be part of the draw in Toronto, insisting that he needs to prioritise his health after a busy few months.

“I’m really disappointed to be missing the National Bank Open in Toronto, especially as I have such fond memories of playing in Canada,” Sinner, who picked up an elbow injury at SW19, said.

“Winning that title in Toronto two years ago was the start of a really special moment for me, but after speaking with my team, I have to prioritise my health.

“I would like to thank Karl Hale, the tournament director, for everything he does, and I’m looking forward to returning to Canada and Toronto in the future to play in front of the great fans.”

The four-time Grand Slam champion won the Canadian Open in 2023 but was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Andrey Rublev last year.

Djokovic will also not take part in this year’s tournament.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion appeared to struggle with his fitness during the latter stages of Wimbledon earlier this month, after an awkward fall in his quarter-final clash with Flavio Cobolli.

The Serbian star has won the tournament on four occasions during his illustrious career.

They are not the only big names who will be absent when the tournament gets underway on July 27.

British No. 1 Jack Draper has been ruled out of the competition with an arm injury.

He revealed the extent of his injury in a post on social media, suggesting he will not be back until the US Open in August.

“After Wimbledon I picked up an injury in my left arm, nothing serious, but I have to make sure it recovers fully for the rest of the season,” read the post.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in Toronto and Cincinnati. See you in NYC.”
