Henry Cavill has long been a fan-favorite for the role of James Bond (and even came close to playing 007 in 2006’s Casino Royale), but while the actor has yet to don the tux and sip a martini, he will soon play a spy in the upcoming action comedy, Argylle. But, could his role as the mysterious and peculiarly hair-styled Agent Argylle affect his chances of ever playing James Bond on the big screen? Here’s what Cavill had to say…
“It’s a fun character. Whether I’m ruled out of Bond because of this or not is up to Barbara Broccoli and Mr. Wilson.”
So, while Cavill does not know whether taking the lead in Argylle will affect his James Bond chances (with the actor saying it’s up to longtime 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson), it sounds like he’s not all that fussed either way. No doubt in part thanks to the fun he had playing Argylle and the potential spy franchise it could spawn on its own…
Speaking with Total Film, Cavill also revealed some insight into the haircut he will sport when he takes to the screen in Argylle. This hair-raising element of the character has been one of the most talked about parts of the movie, with Cavill revealing that it was all director Matthew Vaughn’s idea.
“Matthew came up with it, and said, ‘Look, trust me, I can make it look good.’ You know what? You don’t just wake up and have a flattop. It takes work. I don’t know if I have the time or the patience for that kind of carry-on when it comes to my hair, in real life.”
Argylle Could Spawn a New Spy Franchise for Henry Cavill
Leaving Bond to one side, Argylle could in fact spawn a whole new spy franchise for Henry Cavill. Director Matthew Vaughn has already teased his plans for a sequel, revealing that it would follow Cavill as a younger version of the secret agent.
“Book one is about: how did Argylle become a spy? That will be the next film. And then Argylle 2 is – I don’t want to give it all away, but there’s the young Argylle, and that becomes Henry, because Henry loves the idea of doing a proper Argylle movie as well.”
Directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), Argylle begins when Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, finds herself dragged into real-life action when the plots of her fictional books – which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate – begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization.
Starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Sofia Boutella, and Samuel L. Jackson, Argylle is scheduled to be released on February 2, 2024, by Universal Pictures and Apple Original Films, and will land on Apple TV+ at a later date. Check out the trailer below:
