The revelation that Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, would be the villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came as a surprise to many fans, including the actress herself. After seven years of portraying a heroic character in the MCU, Olsen admitted to being “shocked” upon learning of her character’s drastic turn.
In a conversation with Buzzfeed, Olsen shared that she only found out about the villain twist just before shooting it, and it was a challenging experience for her to ensure that her portrayal of Wanda as a villain would not feel repetitive.
Director Sam Raimi, on the other hand, wanted Olsen to embrace the role, even placing her in situations she never foresaw for Wanda. Olsen enjoyed the evolution of the character and the opportunity to play a different tone but still maintaining her humanity, according to Screen Rant.
Wanda’s Future In The MCU
Despite Wanda’s redemption in the film, with her realizing the error of her ways and correcting her actions, Olsen hopes to see the character’s evolution in future MCU outings. Although Wanda seemingly meets her demise in the film’s finale, it’s highly likely that she’ll return for future projects in the Multiverse Saga.
WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are now available to stream on Disney+.
