Embarking on a game drive through the picturesque Ol Kinyei Conservancy, a group recently encountered a heart-wrenching scene – a lone elephant calf, vulnerable and perilously close to a pride of lions.

This encounter began an extraordinary journey for Kinyei, the young elephant, from orphanhood to a new home at the heart of the Nairobi Nursery.

Quickly alerted by the safari group, Porini Cheetah Camp and various conservation organizations rallied to locate the calf.

Unfortunately, a lactating female elephant, believed to be Kinyei’s mother, was found dead nearby.

The rescue operation, a joint effort led by Marc Goss of the Mara Elephant Project and KWS veterinary officer Dr. Njoroge, aimed to save the fragile orphan.

Transported in the back of a helicopter, cradled by Dr. Njoroge, Kinyei made her way to Nairobi.

Despite challenging weather conditions, the decision to bring her to the Nursery proved crucial for her well-being.

Kinyei faced initial health challenges, including stomach issues and rapid weight loss. Relocating her to Tsavo presented additional hurdles due to the intense heat.

However, she gradually regained strength with resilience and the companionship of Kindani and Bondeni.

An inseparable bond formed between Kindani and Kinyei, and Bondeni’s arrival further enriched their circle, providing Kinyei with purpose and connection.

In 2020, the trio transitioned to the Nairobi Nursery, where lush surroundings and favorable rains created an ideal setting for Kinyei’s food-focused nature.

While initially accustomed to dried Grewia branches from Tsavo, Kinyei adapted to Nairobi’s lush vegetation, reflecting her positive health transformation.

Surrounded by mini matriarchs Maisha and Larro and guided by Keeper Misheck, Kinyei continues to thrive with love and support, symbolizing hope and transformation in the world of elephant conservation.
