  • While a crossover between the MCU and DCU is still far off, there have been light-hearted discussions, which make it a real possibility for the future.

Will Marvel Change The THUNDERBOLTS?

Stunning new fan art imagines Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Henry Cavill’s Superman joining forces to battle the Mad Titan Thanos, marking a major crossover between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe. Marvel Studios and DC Studios’ live-action superhero franchises have always been seen to be in competition, though without question, the MCU has performed far more successfully than DC’s previous Extended Universe. However, with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran rebooting the DCEU into the DC Universe, the futures for both franchises may be looking brighter, which could lead to a crossover between the two.

In vibrant new fan art shared by esheffects, two heroes from these opposing franchises band together to battle Thanos. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Henry Cavill’s Superman have never (and will never) been seen together on-screen, but this art imagines how powerful their joint battle could have been. Henry Cavill will not be portraying Clark Kent’s Superman in the DC Universe, as David Corenswet has been cast in the role for 2025’s Superman: Legacy. However, with Larson’s future as Captain Marvel potentially in jeopardy after 2023’s disappointing The Marvels, a team-up of this magnitude may be just what is needed.

Related Marvel and DC are both heading towards a massive reset, but the MCU and DCU reboots will likely work differently and aim for different goals.

Will There Be An MCU & DCU Crossover?

The fact that filmmaker James Gunn was hired as co-CEO of DC Studios after working on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise led to speculation that the two franchises could, one day, crossover. Marvel and DC Comics featured crossovers periodically, so there is precedence in the source material for the MCU and DCU to share a storyline or two. Back in April 2023, shortly after his announcement of the DCU, Gunn revealed to Empire that him being in charge of DC Studios makes a crossover with the MCU more likely than ever, though this would be many years away.

I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC]. Who knows? That’s many years away, though, I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.

With DC Studios yet to find its feet with its new DC Universe – as the rebooted franchise kicks off in late 2024 with Creature Commandos and Waller – and Marvel Studios trying to recover from recent disappointments in the MCU, a crossover is certainly a long way off. There is even speculation that the MCU could soft-reboot after 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which may push back a crossover even further. However, the fact that there have already been light-hearted discussions means that a crossover between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe is a real possibility in the future.
