Beyonce reveals she has struggled with psoriasis since childhood as she discusses her ‘deeply personal’ hair journey

Beyoncé has opened up about her struggle with psoriasis, an autoimmune condition that affects the skin and joints.

The 42-year-old Texas Hold ‘Em artist revealed for the first time that she grapples with the disease as she spoke with Essence magazine as its March/April 2024 cover star.

The topic came up as she discussed her new haircare range Cécred.

‘I have many beautiful memories attached to my hair. The relationship we have with our hair is such a deeply personal journey,’ she stated to the publication.

And she added, ‘From spending my childhood in my mother’s salon to my father applying oil on my scalp to treat my psoriasis — these moments have been sacred to me.’

Psoriasis occurs when a person’s skin replacement process takes place within days rather than the usual 21-to-28 days.

Beyoncé isn’t the only celeb to have opened up about it — Kim Kardashian has been vocal about her experience with psoriasis throughout the years.

Getting back to why the culture of hair is so deeply ingrained in who she is, the songstress told Essence: ‘The conversations and debates in the salons and barbershops create a sense of community for the people who look to it as a retreat from their everyday lives.’

The mother-of-three explained, ‘For them, it’s a place to feel beautiful and vent, laugh, share secrets and pass down wisdom.

‘It’s the most consistent community gathering we have. It’s so important that it’s a sanctuary.’

The magazine interview comes two weeks after the Houston-bred entertainer confirmed her new business venture.

Noting how she came up with the name, she shared, ‘So I took the end of my name, Cé, and made it the beginning of the word sacred to create Cécred.

‘From my mother’s salon, daily rituals with my father, and years of experience in developing a hair care line, the journey has been just that: Cécred.’

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the skin and sometimes the joints.

Around two per cent of people in the US and UK suffer from the condition.

Psoriasis occurs when a person’s skin replacement process takes place within days rather than the usual 21-to-28 days.

The accumulation of skin cells builds up to form raised plaques, which can be flaky, scaly and itchy.

Psoriasis arthritis can occur in the joints near affected skin, causing them to become tender, swollen and stiff.

Anyone can suffer, but psoriasis is more common in people in their late teens-to-early 30s or those between the ages of 50 and 60.

Psoriasis’ cause is unclear. Flare-ups can be triggered by stress, skin injury, hormonal changes and certain medications.

It is not contagious and there is no cure.

Treatment focuses on managing symptoms via topical creams, gels and medication.

Three years later she dropped her visual album Lemonade, which was full of references to the infidelity.

The rapper later confirmed the indiscretion and narrowly avoiding divorce in a conversation with The New York Times Style Magazine.

The hitmaker and entrepreneur gave a thoughtful answer to a question about her short hair era and whether or not it represented a ‘life change.’

The rapper later confirmed the indiscretion and narrowly avoiding divorce in a conversation with The New York Times Style Magazine.

‘It did. That’s right,’ she said. ‘I love how we associate a certain hairstyle with moments in our lives, like that short-hair moment.’

She recalled the day she went through with the haircut and said she did not have a specific style in mind, but just wanted to ‘liberate’ herself.

‘I remember the day I decided to just cut all my hair off,’ she said. ‘I didn’t have a particular style in mind.’

It wasn’t an aesthetic choice, but it was a very big emotional transformation and metamorphosis that I was going through,’ she said.

‘So much of my identity as a performer has been connected to flowing hair,’ she explained. ‘Cutting my hair off was me rebelling against being this woman that society thinks I’m supposed to be.’

The 16 Carriages hitmaker said she had just welcomed her daughter Blue Ivy, now 12, and wanted to free herself from expectations put upon her about what kind of mother she should be.

The songstress covered Essence magazine in a close-up portrait that showed her golden blonde hair ironed straight and wrapped around her neck.

The glossy used her full name, Beyonce Knowles-Carter.

And the headline teased the interview being about ‘the legacy of Black hair — and her latest venture.’
