In 2015, Jennifer Lawrence dropped a hilarious revelation that earned itself a golden spot in the pages of unforgettable pop-culture moments. Larry David and Seth Meyers were the names that were the primary subject of The Hunger Games superstar’s confession. And it had something to do with her crush on both the comedians.
While the moment reaped laughter from the audience, what proved funnier was the Curb Your Enthusiasm alum’s reaction to it two years later!
Ironically, both situations occurred on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Lawrence’s appearance on the talk show kickstarted the rib-tickling saga, which involved her admission that she used to harbor feelings for the talk show host. She subsequently revealed that Larry David also happened to be among her other celebrity crushes.
Meyers’ (albeit joking) response to this suggested he wasn’t too pleased about being grouped with David as those the Oscar-winning star felt infatuated with. When the Seinfeld co-creator came on the program two years later, it was precisely the fellow comedian’s disposition to Lawrence’s confession that he wished to confront.
And boy, was it something!
Larry David Confronted Seth Meyers Over Jennifer Lawrence’s Confession
When David appeared on Meyers’ chat show for the first time (via YouTube), the latter informed him that other guests had previously talked about him. Among those celebrities was Jennifer Lawrence, whose appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers two years prior entertained viewers immensely (and generated quite a few headlines). Known for her candid, down-to-earth, and quick-witted nature, the Silver Linings Playbook alum was brutally honest about her past feelings for the show host.
But she revealed, during her time there in 2015, that she crushed on Larry David, too.
Naturally, two years later, the latter was inclined to bring up the subject on the show but primarily to confront Meyers for his reaction to Jennifer Lawrence’s follow-up confession! A quick recap: After the No Hard Feelings star disclosed her fascination for David, Seth Meyers stated, “I’m feeling a little bit less awesome about the crush.”
You can likely tell why the Emmy-winning writer-comedian would have a bone to pick with the former SNL alum. It was mostly for comedic effect, though, and what do you know, it succeeded in reaping laughter from all corners of the room.
Following was Larry David‘s statement:
“She [Jennifer Lawrence] sat right here, and she said she had a crush on you, and she also said she had a crush on me. When you heard that she had a crush on me as well, you seemed quite displeased that we were lumped together … As if that detracted from the ego trip that you were on.”
With equal comedic vigor, Seth Meyers responded that he was filled with deep shame afterward for his earlier reaction, so much so that it made him wake up in the middle of the night! He said:
“I recall that reaction. And … having great shame about [it]. Then, you know, waking up in the middle of the night and shaking my wife awake. [I] said, ‘I did an awful thing…’”
Then came David’s quip, “You know what? I was expecting a call. The call never came.” He was eventually asked if he felt bothered about getting grouped with Seth Meyers as one of Jennifer Lawrence’s celebrity crushes, and the answer that came from the Seinfeld alum was just as hilarious as the rest of this exchange.
Larry David Wished To Be Jennifer Lawrence’s Sole Crush
On the prospect of having to share the honor of being Jennifer Lawrence’s crush, Larry David couldn’t lie—he, too, wasn’t pleased. Meyers had asked, “You were happy to be lumped together with me?” The writer-comedian responded, “Look, I’m not going to lie. It would’ve been better if it was just me.”
Much like Meyers, whose initial reaction to being paired with David wasn’t that of excitement and thrill, the latter wasn’t enthusiastic either. To him, Lawrence’s crush on Meyers seemed to negate her crush on the Curb Your Enthusiasm star. “When she said you, I, too, was disappointed,” he affirmed.
When the talk show host implied any other well-known, hot-shot Hollywood actor sharing the honor could potentially not detract from it, Larry David admitted that it wouldn’t have made him feel any better, even if it had been George Clooney! Following was his statement:
“I don’t want George Clooney in the picture either. I wanted me—just me! To me, it takes away from the crush if she’s mentioning other people! How special is it, then, for me? […] I want the big crush, yes.”
Funnily enough, Lawrence talking about her admiration for David wasn’t a one-time occurrence. In 2018, The Passengers actress shared an anecdote on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in which she mentioned that she had unsuccessfully flirted with Larry David during Amy Schumer’s wedding:
“I was flirting with Larry David all night, but it was one-sided. I’m obsessed with Larry David, but he’s not obsessed with me.”
It’s impossible to find this back-and-forth and Lawrence’s professed infatuation with Larry David not hilarious. It’s simply the gift that keeps giving. All humor aside, the 76-year-old comedian has recently been participating in press rounds to promote his HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is slated to premiere its twelfth and final season soon. The first episode will air on February 4, 2024, and will also be available on the network’s streaming service Max.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence’s recent endeavor, No Hard Feelings, can be viewed on Netflix.
