The Brazilian had one of the worst games of his career, but he was not alone in contributing to an astonishingly awful defeat.
Even in such a bad season, this was a new low. Manchester United suffered their worst defeat of the season, setting an undesirable club record of 13 Premier League losses. However, the performance was considerably worse than the 4-0 result indicates.
This was a complete catastrophe all across the pitch, and few players will be able to recover from such an embarrassing defeat. Not least Casemiro, who suffered his worst performance in a United shirt, and arguably in his entire long and glittering career. The serial-winning Brazilian allowed Michael Olise to sprint past him for the opening goal and then gifted him another after making the mother of all mistakes with his own corner flag.
Diogo Dalot, who received more votes for Football Writers’ Player of the Year than Erling Haaland, was likewise ineffective, failing to stop Tyrick Mitchell as he scored goal number three. The entire United defense was disjointed, as was the midfield, which was split open when Jean-Philippe Mateta doubled Palace’s advantage in the first half.
United appeared completely adrift without the injured Bruno Fernandes, with Mason Mount unable to produce anything in the captain’s absence. The only people who left the stadium with any dignity were the fans, who chanted till the end despite the humiliation their teammates caused them.
GOAL ratings for Manchester United players from Selhurst Park…
BelCasemiro Manchester United 2023-24Andre Onana (4/10) is Getty’s goalkeeper and defender.
Despite conceding four goals, he was one of United’s best performances, reducing the damage.
Diogo Dalot (3/10):
Olise was uncontrollable, and he lacked leadership. By the conclusion of the game, he had lost all confidence and could hardly pull together a pass.
Casemiro (2 out of 10):
It’s difficult to see how he can continue his United career after this. He was frequently targeted and provided Palace with just what they wanted: plenty of opportunities.
Jonny Evans(3/10):
The veteran never expected to play as much as he has, and subjecting him to a game like this felt like an unjust punishment.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka(3/10):
He’s really suffering at left-back, and this was another embarrassing experience for him, made worse by the fact that it was against his boyhood team.

Christian Eriksen (3/10):
I couldn’t deal with Palace’s intensity.
Kobby Mainoo (4/10):
A night that may scare a player this young and inexperienced. Far from the worst performer, but he seems lost. Onana bailed out after losing the ball in a risky place.
Mason Mount (3 out of 10)
It did not look like a £60 million ($75 million) deal or a Champions League winner. He appeared clueless.
Alejandro Garnacho Manchester United Crystal Palace 2023-24Getty attacks Anthony (3/10):
This is hardly the player you want leading an inexperienced attack. He struggled to find success down his flank and threw the ball away far too frequently.
Rasmus Hojlund(4/10):
Aside from being punished for challenging Henderson for the goal, he made almost no contributions. Frequently barged off the ball.
Alejandro Garnacho (4/10):
When all hope seemed lost, he kept trying and running, looking annoyed at how bad his teammates were.
Erik Ten Hag Manchester United 2023-24Getty Subs and Manager: Sofyan Amrabat (4/10).
Brought on to try to stop the bleeding, but couldn’t do much.
Amad Diallo (n/a):
Could not help United in either half of the pitch.
Ethan Wheatley (n/a):
It seems wrong to subject him to such humiliation on his second visit.
Erik Ten Hag (3/10):
Was left with an injury-ravaged squad, but the players appear to have given up on him. And it will be difficult to forget that he oversaw the club’s worst amount of defeats in the Premier League history.
