Reports from journalist Florian Plettenberg suggest that Manchester United’s manager is among the top candidates to take over as the next manager for Bayern Munich. This move comes as Thomas Tuchel is set to depart from Bayern Munich after a season where the club failed to secure the league title, marking a shift in the Bundesliga’s power dynamics.
Under Tuchel’s leadership, Bayern Munich’s stronghold on the league was broken, with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen emerging as the champions for the season. This change in fortunes for Bayern has prompted the club to explore new managerial options, with ten Hag being one of the leading contenders. It’s noteworthy that Bayern Munich had previously approached former Man United manager Ralf Rangnick, who opted to stay committed to the Austrian national team, turning down the opportunity with Bayern.
Discussions regarding ten Hag’s potential move to Bayern Munich have already commenced between his management and the German club. However, there hasn’t been direct dialogue between Bayern Munich and ten Hag himself at this stage.
The decision to part ways with Tuchel was made earlier in February, with Alonso initially emerging as Bayern’s preferred choice before deciding to stay at Leverkusen. Another candidate considered was Julian Nagelsmann, who had a stint with Bayern Munich before moving on to lead the German national team.
Currently, the focus of Bayern Munich’s managerial search is on ten Hag and Julen Lopetegui. The latter has been under pressure at Manchester United due to the team’s underwhelming performance, sitting in eighth place in the league standings.
The situation at Manchester United has been further complicated by the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe as a new minority owner, leading to speculations about potential changes in leadership. If ten Hag exits Old Trafford at the end of the season, he could be poised to take on the role at Bayern Munich, leveraging his previous experience at the German club during his tenure with Bayern Munich II during Pep Guardiola’s early years at the helm.
