Liverpool player ratings vs Everton: It’s all over for Jurgen Klopp! Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah are bad again as nervous Reds suffer catastrophic derby defeat, leaving title ambitions in shambles

The Reds were once again guilty of alarming wastefulness and awful defending as they crashed to a humiliating defeat at Goodison Park.

Liverpool’s Premier League title aspirations have been dashed after a humiliating 2-0 defeat at Everton on Wednesday, with the Reds once again paying a high price for poor finishing and even poorer defense.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could have moved level with Arsenal at the top of the table with a win, but they fell down in comical circumstances in the first half, with players taking turns failing to clear the ball before Jarrad Branthwaite slipped a shot under Alisson’s figure.

Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, and Luis Diaz then squandered one great chance after another to tie the game before Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose unmarked at the back post in the 58th minute to head home a Dwight McNeil corner and secure Everton’s first victory over their city rivals at Goodison Park since 2010.

GOAL evaluates all of the Liverpool players on display on Merseyside, as they suffered a crushing defeat in Klopp’s farewell derby, which means his nine-year reign will almost certainly conclude without a second league title…

Alisson Becker, Everton Liverpool Premier League 2023-24. Getty’s goalkeeper and defender is Alisson (5/10).

His defenders clearly let him down on both goals, but he was fortunate not to be penalized for taking out an offside Calvert-Lewin.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (4 /10):

Created numerous fantastic chances with his genuinely ridiculous passing, but was one of those who failed to clear the ball in the build-up to Everton’s first goal, followed by a pitiful attempt to stop Calvert-Lewin’s second.

Ibrahima Konate (3/10):

Once again, an accident is waiting to happen. His errant clearing resulted in a goal for Godfrey, and he appeared shaky in control on several occasions. I was lucky to make it to the hour mark.

Virgil Van Dijk (5/10):

May have been let down by those around him – again – but as captain, he must accept responsibility for Liverpool’s complete inability to keep clean sheets. His irritability resulted in a dissent booking.

Andy Robertson (5/10):

A good outlet down the left flank, but he should have fired across the box instead of firing from an acute angle when placed through on goal.

Dominik Szoboszlai (3/10):

A shoddy copy of the player who had an outstanding first half of the season. Indecisive and ineffectual.

Alexis Macallister (5/10):

The reason Liverpool grabbed control of the game around the break was weariness, which has been a big issue for the overworked Argentine in recent weeks.

Curtis Jones (3/10):

Unsurprisingly, he played with a lot of heart but was unable to have a significant influence on the game before being withdrawn after an hour.

Getty attack by Mohamed Salah (4/10):

Created two chances with brilliant lay-offs that could have been converted, but his finishing was dreadfully wasteful. Just haven’t looked like the same guy since returning from injury.

Darwin Nunez (3/10):

The Uruguayan delivered an absolutely terrible performance, struggling to handle the ball throughout the evening and missing a golden opportunity to level the game. It’s hard to see how Liverpool will ever rely on him to score goals.

Luis Diaz (6/10):

Kept the battle to Everton with his pace and quick feet, although he wasted one fine chance in the first half before hitting the crossbar with a spectacular effort after the break.

Came in midway through the second half but failed to turn the game around.

Jarell Quansah(5/10):

Much better than the man he replaced, Konate, but that doesn’t say much.

Wataru Endo (5/10):

Brought on for Szoboszlai, but failed to impress.

Kostas Tsimikas (NA):

Not long enough to merit a score.

Joe Gomez (n/a):

Only came on for the last ten minutes.

Jurgen Klopp (4/10):

Injuries up front clearly forced him to start Nunez, but the German erred by sticking with Konate and Szoboszlai, and his dream of a fairy-tale goodbye has been destroyed.
