Those in Hollywood such as Brad Pitt are usually discussing Tom’s dangerous stunts. However, Tom Cruise is more than that, and has quite the vision when it comes to films, more so than just the stunts.
During his time on The Mummy, many ideas were pitched. One of them was to have a kissing scene with Annabelle Wallis, though the actor was adamant about turning it down. However, there was another pitch that Cruise finally reconsidered, and a lot of it has to with Wallis and how she kept pressing the matter.
Cruise took on the scene, and it was one fans haven’t really seen from the actor with a co-star over the years. Let’s reveal what that scene was, and so much more.
Tom Cruise Saved Annabelle Wallis’ Life During The Mummy
Released in 2017, The Mummy was a success at the box office, generating $410 million, despite a massive budget of nearly $200 million. Reviews for the film were mixed, but it was quite the experience for the cast, especially Annabelle Wallis who wasn’t used to such daring stunts alongside Tom Cruise.
She revealed with People, “It was just a crazy couple of days. There was an airplane crash sequence in the script and they were like, ‘You know, we’re going to build a set and do this and do that using CGI.’ Tom said, ‘No, we’re going to do it for real. You can’t prepare for it, and it’s quite unnerving because Tom had never done anything like that before, the stunt team had never done it.”
Although it was an exhilarating experience for the actress, things go very scary when her parachute wouldn’t eject. Thankfully, Cruise was there for the save.
“I had to put a parachute pack on me and the pack got stuck. There was a thing wrapped tight around my neck and I was like, ‘Oh my God! I’m stuck and the gravity is going to return and it’s going to choke me,’ ” Wallis says. “It was this amazing Tom moment where I looked and I couldn’t get myself un-hooked and said ‘Tom! I’m stuck, I’m stuck!’ “
“Tom was like, ‘Annabelle, don’t worry I got you,’ and he ran and freed me and we returned to earth and he’d saved my life. So I feel very indebted to him.”
Not only did Cruise save the actress, but she also convinced him to take on a scene he would always reject in the past.
Tom Cruise Was Against Running With Co-Stars In Films But Annabelle Wallis Finally Convinced Him To Do Otherwise
This rule is a bit odd, but hey, Tom Cruise always does things differently. Annabelle Wallis revealed that Tom usually refuses to run with a co-star during his films, and takes on running scenes alone.
Although Tom rejected the scene request at first, things changed after he saw Wallis running on the treadmill. After Cruise gave Wallis the green-light, the actress compared it to winning an Oscar.
She revealed with The Hollywood Reporter, “He told me no at first. He said, ‘Nobody runs onscreen [with me],’ and I said, ‘But I’m a really good runner.’ So I would time my treadmill so that he’d walk in and see me run. And then he added all these running scenes. So that was it. It was, like, better than an Oscar. I was so happy! I was so happy that I got to run onscreen with Tom Cruise.”
It turned out to be yet another memorable moment between the two co-stars.
Tom Cruise Had Other Strict Rules, Including His Precautions During The Pandemic
During the filming of Mission: Impossible, things were very tense behind the scenes. The film needed to follow protocols given the height of the pandemic at the time. Cruise would lose it on crew members for standing too close behind the scenes.
He said in his rant, “If I see you do it again you’re (expletive) gone. And if anyone on this crew does it, that’s it.”
“We are the gold standard. They’re back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us. Because they believe in us and what we’re doing. I’m on the phone with every (expletive) studio at night, insurance companies, producers and they’re looking at us and using us to make their movies. We are creating thousands of jobs, you (expletive). I don’t ever want to see it again. Ever!”
Cruise didn’t apologize for the moment stating, “I said what I said.” Tom would further reveal that the emotions of it all made the situation very difficult.
“All those emotions were going through my mind,” he added. “And for the whole crew to know that we’d started rolling on a movie was just a huge relief… It was very emotional.”
Working a film with Tom Cruise can be very intense, but fulfilling at the same time especially given his recent work.
