Makeup malfunction: Selena Gomez looked back at her tanning lotion mishap at the 2018 Met Gala in a video that was shared to Vogue’s YouTube account on Tuesday
Gomez began the story by expressing that she and her collaborators were interested in adding a bit of darkness to her complexion, which initially worked out well.
‘For the Met Gala I was getting ready and we wanted to add some color. So [I] put on some of this tanning lotion and it looked really beautiful and very even,’ she said.
The Come & Get It singer then noted that, as time passed, the cream changed its shade incrementally.
‘As the evening kept going on it was getting a little darker and darker and I didn’t notice it,’ she stated.
Time flies: The hitmaker pointed out that, as the evening went on, her complexion was ‘getting a little darker and darker and I didn’t notice it’
The songstress also expressed that, given the high profile of the annual event itself, she had to play off the beauty mishap.
She recalled, ‘I’m at the Met Gala — basically one of the most prestige, beautiful events and I’m walking trying to look all beautiful.’
Gomez then remarked that she saw a photograph of her that had been taken during the function and immediately realized that her tanning lotion had been more potent than she had anticipated.
She said, ‘I look at a photo of myself when I sit down and I am completely orange. I was like, “This is going to be terrible because I’m going to get eaten alive about this.”‘
Realization: The singer then expressed that, when she found out that her makeup was getting darker, she would be the subject of much criticism from her fans
The singer then noted that she took the situation in stride and spoke about a humorous clip that she shared to her Instagram account following the event.
‘I had my security take a video of me, because my first reaction was just to get the hell out of there,’ she said.
She added that, in the post, ‘I’m literally just hauling a** to my car and then gonna put it online. I was saying, “this is my reaction after seeing my Met Gala photos.”‘
In the clip’s caption, Gomez humorously wrote that running away from the event was the best thing she could do ‘when I saw my pictures from MET.’
Hightailing it: The singer also humorously shared a video of herself running away from the Met Gala to her Instagram account after she realized that her makeup had become darker
After she initially shared the video to her Instagram account, an insider spoke to People and pointed out that the singer was poking fun at herself for her appearance by posting the clip.
They expressed that she ‘was just clapping back at people who were commenting on her tan and hair and wanted to make a joke about it.’
The source also pointed out that the hitmaker loved her outfit for the evening and that she picked the one that she wore not long before the Met Gala occurred.
They noted that Gomez ‘had two outfits to choose from and decided on Sunday which one she was going to go with. She loved the dress and was very involved with it.’
