(HNMO) – Archaeologists are studying the value of hundreds of gold coins from ancient Rome discovered in an ancient theater in Southern Italy.

According to CNN, hundreds of gold coins dating from the late Roman Empire were discovered in a soapstone jar buried under the Cressoni Theater in Como, north of Milan.
“We still do not know the details of the historical and cultural value of this artifact,” Italian Culture Minister Alberto Bonisoli said at a press conference. However, this is a truly valuable treasure for our archaeological work and we are proud of this discovery.”
According to the Italian Ministry of Culture, hundreds of these coins were discovered last weekend and were transferred to the Mibac restoration room in Milan for examination.
Details of this discovery will be announced at a press conference today (September 10). Italian officials did not price the newly unearthed treasures, but Italian news sites said they were worth millions of dollars.
The Cressoni Theater opened in 1807 before being converted into a cinema and closed in 1997. The area is located not far from the ancient town of Novum Comum, home to many important Roman antiquities.
