The “Into You” singer has come under fire since ending her marriage to Dalton Gomez and embarking on a relationship with Slater, who she met on the set of the live-adaptation of the hit Broadway musical back in 2022. The pair faced backlash from the moment they first sparked dating speculation (their relationship was confirmed in July 2023, FYI) with Grande being branded a “homewrecker” for allegedly breaking up Slater and childhood sweetheart Lilly Jay’s marriage. It was also speculated that Grande’s marriage to Gomez ended due to her and Slater’s relationship, although a source told US Weekly last year that Ariana and Ethan only started dating after they ended things with their respective partners.
The 30-year-old singer and actress addressed the negative comments in her hit song “Yes… And?” with lyrics such as, “Why do you care so much whose [expletive] I ride?” And she has once again spoken out about the backlash in a new podcast, which we think is her most candid interview about the relationship so far!

The “7 Rings” singer appeared on the February 26th episode of the Zach Sang Show to promote her new album Eternal Sunshine – but briefly diverted from talking about music to talking about the backlash she is receiving for her relationship with the SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! actor.
Although she didn’t go into details about their relationship, the R.E.M. Beauty mogul spoke about the “frustration” she felt in terms of seeing negative things written about her and the people she loves.
“I feel like we don’t need to go into any specifics, but, of course, there’s like an insatiable frustration, inexplicable, hellish feeling with watching people, misunderstand the people you love and you and anything,” she said.

The two-time Grammy winner also seemed to hint that the tabloids are being particularly harsh on her and the Redheads Anonymous star because they fit a particular narrative, suggesting that the media is unfairly “selective” when it comes to who they write negative things about.
“We know this about the tabloids and about the media. We selectively remember that this is what the tabloids do to people, especially women, based on whether or not we like the person,” the “Positions” singer thought.
“We selectively remember that. We selectively leave space for humanness, for nuance. They don’t leave space for that, well they do for their friends and their family, it’s selective,” she continued, adding: “They turn it off when that aligns with a version of a person that they have in their head that they want to believe is true.”

The Sam & Cat alum also wondered whether her new album will further add to the negativity, but ultimately decided that “it’s too late” since the vinyls have already been printed.
“Pieces of it touch on things that are real and then pieces of it are also just like… part of the concept,” the “Stuck With U” singer explained, in reference to the new album. “So what is that separation?” she asked, adding: “And it’s so scary to leave it up to these selective memory people to decipher. It’s scary. But I digress. It’s too late. The vinyls have been printed.”
