Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for one match after making obscene gestures during Al Nassr’s 3-2 win over Al Shabab.
On February 26, Ronaldo scored the opening goal in the Riyadh derby against Al Shabab from the penalty spot, helping his team win the final score 3-2. However, the striker was caught making an inappropriate gesture after being taunted by home team fans.
Accordingly, Al Shabab fans chanted Lionel Messi’s name to arouse anger from Cristiano Ronaldo, and it worked for them when CR7 responded. The 39-year-old player turned to face the fans, raised one hand to his ear, then brought his hand down to groin level and moved back and forth.
Ronaldo was subsequently criticized for his actions and investigations were immediately launched . In the latest move, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has issued a 1-match ban for the Portuguese superstar. The committee also said Ronaldo will have to pay a fine of 10,000 Saudi riyals ($2,666) to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and 20,000 riyals to Al Shabab to cover the costs of filing a complaint. This decision cannot be appealed.
With the above penalty, the Portuguese striker will miss the team’s midweek match with bottom club Al Hazm. This will certainly be a heavy loss for Al Nassr – the team is losing in the Saudi Pro League championship race with top team Al Hilal.
The owner of 5 Golden Balls is currently the league leader in goals with 22 goals in 20 appearances this season. Ronaldo will return to action when his team travels to the United Arab Emirates to participate in the AFC Champions League. They will face UAE side Al Ain in the first leg of the quarter-finals on March 4.
