Marcus Rashford of Manchester United got in trouble for “pressing” too hard against Luton Town on Sunday.
Though Erik ten Hag’s team came away with all three points, the close 2-1 win and some great individual play showed Man United where they need to improve if they want to catch Aston Villa and Tottenham at the top of the table.
Ross Barkley of Luton was trying to get up the field late in the game, and a video of Rashford trying to stop him went viral on social media.
Rashford pressed Barkley while he had the ball, but he stayed away from the former Chelsea player enough that he never made a tackle for the ball.
When the 30-year-old midfielder tried to go around Rashford to the forward’s right but couldn’t, Barkley went around the 26-year-old to his left, which was easier for him.
The whole thing wasted valuable seconds as Luton frantically tried to tie the game against Manchester United at the last minute. However, it didn’t impress United fans because Barkley was able to move around him without any trouble.
There was a joke video on X (formerly Twitter) that said, “Top pressing by Rashford.” I have no idea how Ross Barkley got to him.
In response to the video of Rashford, one user wrote, “Would trade him for a bag of strawberry bon bons.” Another said, “A Jaffa cake would be a better distraction for Barkley than Rashford.”
“If it wasn’t so serious, it would be funny,” said one person. The state of that,” and someone else said, “Broooo Rashford was looking like I don’t know what.”
Five people said Rashford “trusts his teammates,” but they added an emoji that looks like they are rolling around laughing.
Rasmus Hojlund made the difference at Kenilworth Road. He scored the first goal in just 40 seconds and then was in the right place at the right time to score a “outrageous” goal with his chest.
The Dane claimed that he meant to score that goal, even though some say it was an accident that the ball went into the net.
He told Sky Sports, “Yes, I did mean it.” I saw my dead body. To be honest, I was shocked that it was such a good goal. So this is how I’m trying to train.
With his early goal, Hojlund became the youngest player in Premier League history to score in six straight games. He did this just 14 days after turning 21, beating Joe Willock’s record of 21 years and 272 days.
United will play Fulham at home next Saturday in the Premier League.
