Known for his incredible performances in The Witcher and as Superman in the DC Extended Universe, Henry Cavill has long been a fan favorite for the iconic role of James Bond. With rumors swirling about Cavill potentially being the next actor to Don the Tuxedo, he once spoke out about how his then upcoming role in the action comedy Argylle might influence his chances.
Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Argylle features Cavill in the role of the super spy similar to James Bond. The actor, however, is still optimistic about his prospect of landing the role as he shared that the decision is totally on the James Bond producing duo, Barbara Broccoli, and Michael G. Wilson.
Henry Cavill Addressed the Impact of Argylle on His James Bond Casting
During an interview with Total Film, actor Henry Cavill shared his perspective on whether his role in Argylle would impact his chances of being the next James Bond after Daniel Craig. However, despite playing a suave spy character, similar to Bond, in Matthew Vaughn’s action comedy film, Cavill emphasized that it would not impact his chances of going for the popular franchise role.
“Whether I’m ruled out of Bond because of this or not is up to Barbara Broccoli and Mr. Wilson,” he told Total Film in an interview. Cavill candidly expressed his desire to play the British spy after he lost his past attempts for the role to Craig for the 2006 film Casino Royale.
He admitted to Men’s Health in 2019 that he may not have been well prepared for the opportunity but remains undeterred, as he expressed eagerness to embody the character. In an interview with GQ, Cavill expressed his enthusiasm for the role.
“If [they] were interested in that, I would absolutely jump at the opportunity,” he said during the interview. The actor once again affirmed his willingness to embrace the role that fans eagerly anticipate seeing him portray on the big screen.
Matthew Vaughn Shared Barbara Broccoli Rejected Henry Cavill’s Audition
In a recent interview with SiriusXM, director Matthew Vaughn revealed that Henry Cavill was among the finalists considered to don the 007 mantle along with Daniel Craig. During the interview, Vaughn reminisced about the audition process, recalling how both Cavill and Caring were being considered for the role of James Bond.
“When Henry was auditioning for Bond, I was at Pinewood, right? And Daniel was as well at the same time,” he said before adding, “I’d go off and meet with Daniel and [I’d] say what’s going on, and he said there’s this young guy, Henry Cavill I think they’re seeing as well.”
He further shared that although the director preferred Cavill’s audition, the James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli preferred Daniel Craig, saying that they decided that the Man of Steel star was too young. Although Cavill did not say much about James Bond, the actor noted that Daniel Craig “did an amazing job” starring in the franchise.
“He and everyone else involved breathed new life into the franchise, which did it wonders,” he said. While Cavill’s casting as James Bond remains uncertain, the actor expressing his desire to play the character continues to be a hope for his fans.
Argylle is playing in theatres.
