The Kansas City Chiefs won their second successive Super Bowl title after defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime stole victory for the Chiefs to secure their third title in five years.

With the 49ers seconds from victory, the Chiefs forced overtime with a late field goal to make the scores tied at 19-19.

Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers edged back in front with a field goal to regain their lead as they closed in on a sixth title, but Mahomes executed a stunning drive which resulted in a touchdown pass for Hardman to seal a dramatic win.

The Chiefs become the first team to win back-to-back titles since the New England Patriots achieved the feat in 2003 and 2004.

“The whole game was just a microcosm of our entire season,” Mahomes said, who became only the sixth quarterback in franchise history to win three or more Super Bowls.

“The defence kept us in there, with the offence making plays when it counted. I’m just so proud of the guys, they just kept believing. Just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs.

“I know we’re going to celebrate tonight, but we’re not done. We’ve got a young team and we’re going to keep this thing going.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised his defence who “played out of their mind” and 28-year-old Mahomes credited Reid as the “best coach of all time”.

“I know he doesn’t have the trophies yet, but the way he’s able to navigate every single team he has, continues to have success no matter where he’s at,” Mahomes added.

“I don’t think I’d be the quarterback that I am if I didn’t have coach Reid as my head coach.”

Tight end Travis Kelce, who also claimed his third Super Bowl ring, said he is already targeting winning the title for a third time in a row next season.

“We’ve been fighting for this all year,” he said. “The goal has always been to get three [in a row] but you can’t do it without getting two and we’ve had a target on our back all year.

“We get a chance to do it all again next year. I’ll see you there. Viva Las Vegas!”

The 2024 Super Bowl will go down as a classic, with the 49ers – who were slight favourites heading into the contest – leading 10-3 at half-time.

It was very much a defence-dominated game, a vast contrast to the Chiefs’ victory in 2023 following their high-scoring victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mahomes delivered once again as his drive in the final two minutes of regulation put the Chiefs in field-goal range, before his greatness showed up in overtime.

49ers coach Shanahan was visibly deflated after falling short in his third defeat as a coach in the Super Bowl.

“There’s no right words right now,” Shanahan said after the game. “It hurts.

“Everybody understands that we knew it would hurt if it came to this, but I’m just proud of our guys. They put themselves out there, they played their tails off, they played through a lot of stuff.

“That’s something we’ve got to live with.”
