In 2018, a team from the archaeological research center of the University of Brussels (CReA-Patrimoine) completed an important excavation in Pachacamac, Peru. Here they discovered an intact mummy that was quite well preserved.
Based on evidence and inspection results, the group of experts confirmed that this tomb was buried between 1000 and 1200, meaning it has existed for more than 1,000 years. According to experts, the deceased was wrapped in a giant cloth bundle that served as a coffin .
However, experts have discovered a strange phenomenon in this thousand-year-old tomb. The bones in the tomb were arranged very carefully and there was the remains of an adult carefully arranged in the middle. Around this skeleton are the remains of many other people, mainly children, but arranged haphazardly.

Archaeologists noticed that the children’s bodies were placed in an extremely unusual position in the tomb. They are placed in a certain position with a certain intention. Eckhout believes this represents a kind of “ rebirth in the afterlife”. Some of them may have died from natural causes such as illness, while others may have been used for religious activities such as sacrifice.
Peter Eeckhout, an archaeologist at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium, is the leader of this team of scientists. He said that according to what the research team obtained, the top part of the tomb was covered with cloth and burial items. It could very well have been the resting place of pilgrims.

Archaeologists also found a mysterious object in the tomb, a “false head” made of wood . According to on-site statistics, there were 5 such heads, but these heads were not wrapped in cloth but stuffed into the corpse of a mummy. This scene made archaeologists extremely frightened.
Regarding this mysterious form of tomb, anthropologist Matthew Piscitelli of the University of Illinois believes: “These fake heads could be used as a sacrifice to bring the deceased to the afterlife.”
As for the bones of the children in the tomb , Eckhout said it cannot be ruled out that they were used in ritual activities. However, experts have not yet been able to draw final conclusions about this arrangement. It cannot be denied that this thousand-year-old tomb has added an unsolved mystery to the area.
