Mukkoka’s Remarkable Journey: A Tale of Rescue, Resilience, and Hope

In a remarkable rescue mission on September 20, 2018, the expansive Tiva River became the stage for a heartwarming saga of survival.

The protagonist? A lone elephant calf named Mukkoka was discovered by the vigilant eyes of Nterto Kapina, leader of the Tiva De-Snaring Team.

This awe-inspiring narrative underscores the unwavering efforts of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), demonstrating how collaboration and persistence can turn a desperate situation into a beacon of hope.

During a routine fixed-wing patrol alongside DSWT pilot Neville Sheldrick, Kapina noticed the tracks of a solitary elephant calf tracing down the Tiva River.

Amidst the many tracks of elephant herds, Kapina discerned fresher tracks, signaling a lone calf in distress.

Following these tracks for over 20 kilometers from the air, the team, unfortunately, lost sight of the calf, necessitating a ground search the following day.

Despite the ground team losing the calf’s trail, the DSWT-funded Mobile North De-Snaring Team found the distressed calf in the riverbed two days later.

Acting swiftly and in consultation with Dr. Jeremiah Poghon from the KWS Veterinary Office, the rescue unfolded, ensuring the calf’s safety from potential harm by predators.

Approximately 12 months old and severely dehydrated, Mukkoka received immediate care upon arrival at the DSWT Ithumba Reintegration Unit.

Dedicated keepers ensured he received milk and rehydration fluids, setting the stage for the next chapter in his recovery journey.

After a brief stay at Ithumba, Mukkoka was transported to the DSWT Nairobi Nursery, with a drip providing IV fluids during the flight to ensure his well-being.

Named after a location along the Tiva River, Mukkoka’s arrival in Nairobi marked a pivotal moment in his rehabilitation.

At the DSWT Nairobi Nursery, Mukkoka’s arrival infused hope. Despite the mystery surrounding his abandonment, the team provided round-the-clock care, administering medication and nourishment.

Surrounded by dedicated keepers, the young bull embarked on his path to healing.

Mukkoka’s miraculous rescue is a testament to the power of collaboration and determination in adversity.

As he takes his initial steps towards recovery at the DSWT Nairobi Nursery, Mukkoka’s journey is a powerful reminder of wildlife resilience and the crucial role of conservation efforts in safeguarding these majestic creatures for generations to come.
