In a profoundly moving incident, a baby elephant named Roi is captured mourning the loss of her mother, who fell victim to a deadly spear wielded by a poacher in pursuit of ivory tusks.
The heart-wrenching scene unfolds as Roi stands somberly over her mother’s lifeless body, the aftermath of a brutal raid on endangered elephants in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Park.
Just 24 hours prior, these endangered animals were joyfully captured on camera playing together in the same park.
The recorded footage vividly captures the distress of the orphaned calf facing the imminent threat of starvation without her mother’s nurturing milk.
Scenes that tug at the heartstrings show Roi appearing lost as she awaits rescue from the national park.
After briefly integrating with another herd, Roi confronted the looming threat of starvation without her mother’s nourishing milk. Fortunately, a dramatic rescue operation by wildlife experts ensured Roi’s safety.
In a carefully orchestrated mission, the young elephant was separated from the herd, tranquilized, and airlifted to safety. This operation came after Roi was left orphaned due to her mother’s tragic demise.
“The older elephants paid her attention and gave her the love and affection she craved and missed.
As the days have passed, little Roi has settled in ultimately and is now highly attached to her keepers, familiar with the routine, and is playing once more – she is a confident little elephant,” said a spokesperson.
Ivory poaching remains a significant threat in Africa, claiming one elephant every 15 minutes. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust aims to raise £15,000 to rescue more orphaned baby elephants like Roi, victims of poaching.
