Tom Cruise Celebrates Unexpected First Major Awards Win For ‘Mission: Impossible 7’

What’s better than a ripe, fresh red tomato? If you ask Tom Cruise, a Golden Tomato.

For the past 25 years, review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes has been honoring the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. For 2023, the seventh installment of the high-octane Mission: Impossible franchise, headlined by A+ lister Cruise, has cinched the coveted Golden Tomato for the Best-Reviewed Action Adventure movie of 2023.

Cruise, who plays Mission: Impossible protagonist, Impossible Missions Force spy and death-defying stunt master Ethan Hunt, thanked both film critics and loyal fans for securing the victory for Dead Reckoning, in a video shared by Rotten Tomatoes:

“I want to thank you, Rotten Tomatoes, and all the critics, and all the fans, because we make these movies for each and every one of you,” Cruise said in the video.

“We are thrilled, and truly honored to be not only one of the best-reviewed films of the year, but the best-reviewed action movie of 2023,” he added, speaking on behalf of his Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning cast (which includes The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson and Captain America’s Hayley Atwell) as well as director and frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie.

Mission: Impossible 7 missed out on its opportunity to score a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Visual Effects (losing out to Oppenheimer) and a Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (which went to Barbie), but the summer blockbuster still has the opportunity to get an Oscar nom, and potentially a win.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning will start streaming on Paramount+ on Jan. 25. Mission: Impossible 8, which will no longer be called Dead Reckoning Part Two, is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on May 23, 2025.
