Millennium Media has announced that Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body) and Michele Morrone (365 Days) will be starring in the upcoming AI sci-fi thriller Subservience, due to start filming early in 2023.
Written by Will Honley (Escape Room: Tournament of Champions) and April Maguire (Lost Girls), Subservience is about a struggling overworked father (Morrone) who hires a domestic SIM (Fox) to help care for his house and family. The situation quickly turns horrific as the simulant gains awareness and begins wreaking havoc on ordinary family life.
Fox will rejoin her Till Death director, S.K. Dale, who says, “This film will show a side of Megan that we have never seen before. The cast that we are ᴀssembling will elevate this emotionally-charged story and I cannot wait to show you all what we have in store.” According to Millennium Media President and producer Jeffrey Greenstein, “Megan and Michele are perfect for this timely and provocative thriller! As Megan’s 3rd film with us, this high concept and topical subject make for a cautionary tale of AI and the frighteningly real dangers that could rise.” Production on Subservience is scheduled to begin at the Bulgarian Nu Boyana Studio on January 7, 2023.
Artificial intelligence and its horror possibilities have been a popular subject matter for Hollywood in recent years, particularly as technology has caught up to the imagination of a world where robots can be both helpful and potentially violent. While always a popular subject for sci-fi since the mid-20th century, recent films like M3GAN and shows like HBO’s Westworld are evidence of renewed interest by audiences. More than a trip down into the uncanny valley, AI-themed horror has the potential to explore what differentiates the truly human from the monstrous, the genuine from the artificial.
Fox, who is a fave for her role as a bloodthirsty teen who feeds on the young men in the cult-hit Jennifer’s Body (2009), seems perfect for the role of a murderous fem-bot. Being able to play the bombshell with great vulnerability, as in her recent foray with Till Death, is a talent that Fox has not been able to display as much as she definitely could have in past roles. Michel Morrone has also made waves with Netflix’s 365 Days franchise, which, while not the best written/acted movies on Netflix, definitely speaks to his Sєx appeal and makes a good pairing with Fox for this film.
