Real Madrid found themselves in a tough situation in the summer when Thibaut Courtois tore his ACL before the start of the season. The Belgian is widely considered the best goalkeeper in the world and was a nailed-on starter in Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The club did move quickly to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea.
Kepa did well after arriving. He finds himself in a tough competition for the first-team gloves though, as Andriy Lunin has been very impressive in recent months as well.
It looks like Real Madrid did have the chance to bring back club legend, Keylor Navas, in the summer. But did not end up making a move for the Costa Rican icon.
As reported by MARCA, Navas had picked up the phone to offer his services to Real Madrid. His experience and knowledge of the club counted in his favour, but Los Blancos did not make a move.
Real Madrid turned down chance to bring back club legend
Navas is one of the best goalkeepers of his generation and almost certainly the most underrated. He played a key part in Real Madrid’s legendary Champions League threepeat.
Navas is 37 years of age now though and finds himself as the third-choice goalkeeper at PSG. He has not played a game this season. Real Madrid needed to sign a starter between the posts in the summer in the absence of Courtois. The Costa Rican international might not be that at this stage of his career.
The goalkeeping situation at Real Madrid is very interesting. Kepa was placed as the starter immediately after his arrival. An injury to the Spaniard did allow Lunin to get a run of games and the 24-year-old took the opportunity with both hands. As a result, there is real competition between the two right now for the first-team gloves, going into the second half of the campaign.
