Zack Snyder Shares Which Man of Steel Scenes Always Make Him Emotional

Director Zack Snyder has addressed the scenes that make him teary-eyed from his superhero movie Man of Steel.

Officially launching the DCEU, Man of Steel was released in 2013. Introducing Henry Cavill as Superman, the movie also featured Kevin Costner as Clark’s adoptive father, Jonathan Kent. Fielding questions from fans in a new video for Letterboxd, Snyder was asked about the movie’s scenes with Costner’s character and how they tend to make fans cry. For his part, Snyder admitted that he also gets emotional with the Jonathan Kent scenes, giving credit to Costner’s portrayal along with screenwriter David S. Goyer.Related In the latest Comic Book Legends Revealed, see the surprising influence Superman’s Man of Steel reboot had on Sandman’s creation

“I get teary with all the Costner scenes,” Snyder explained. “I get pretty teary at, ‘You are my son.’ So, yeah, Costner is just great in that movie… David Goyer crushed that one.”

Man of Steel rebooted Superman, launching both the DCEU and what would become known as the “SnyderVerse.” Along with Cavill in the lead and Costner as Jonathan Kent, the movie also starred Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, and Russell Crowe as Jor-El. The film grossed more than $668 million at the box office and led to several tie-in movies, such as the Snyder-directed sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After his Justice League movie was drastically changed by Joss Whedon in editing, Snyder would later revisit his SnyderVerse with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.

Henry Cavill Briefly Returned as Superman

Cavill’s Superman made one last appearance in 2022 with his cameo at the end of Black Adam. It was planned for the character to return for additional films, which would have included a showdown with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, but this was nixed when James Gunn and Peter Safran boarded DC Studios. They’re now launching an all-new DC continuity, dubbed the DCU, which will see David Corenswet taking over as the new Man of Steel. The DCEU, launched by Man of Steel, has officially come to an end with the recent release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Man of Steel is streaming on Max, and it was recently made available to watch on Netflix alongside several other DC movies. As for Snyder, the director’s newest film, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, can be found streaming on Netflix after its recent premiere.
