Kate Winslet teases Tom Cruise after breaking one of his impressive records. The 47-year-old British actress recently spoke with USA Today about her training while filming her latest film Avatar: The Way of Water . While starring in James Cameron ‘s blockbuster , Kate Winslet famously held her breath underwater for 7 minutes and 47 seconds.

This moment officially broke Tom Cruise’s previous record after he held his breath underwater for 6 minutes while filming Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015.

“I mean, I don’t know Tom at all and have never met him in person but I’m sure Tom would be sick of hearing about how I broke his record. I love this diving thing though… I’m surprised at how much I can hold my breath while diving and how much I’m getting better,” she said, laughing.

Kate Winslet is also grateful to her husband Edward Abel Smith for helping her practice holding her breath underwater.

“He is a person with an extremely fit, healthy body and is capable of doing many things,” Winslet shared with the press. “You practice with me because if I need to practice without an instructor while filming, we’re still safe. There are things you really cannot do on your own. Scuba diving is the same, you need someone to help you. It’s a sport , it’s a s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁, and your body adapts to be able to do that. So having Edward there was very important.”

Sigourney Weaver, who stars alongside Winslet in the 2009 Avatar sequel, also told USA Today that she’s glad that Kate Winslet kept her diving crown for so long.

“We are so happy for Kate that she has done so. My husband (theatre director Jim Simpson-NV) and I both dived for 6 minutes and 30 seconds, which surprised us and our teacher Kirk Krack, who teaches US Navy SEALs. Everyone achieved their best.”

Earlier this month, Winslet revealed she captured the moment after holding her breath for more than seven minutes. “I have video of myself surfacing and saying, ‘Am I dead yet, am I dead yet? What is my diving time?’” she told Total Film in an interview.

“I immediately wanted to know my dive time. And I couldn’t believe it. I continued, ‘I want director James Cameron to know this record right away,’” Kate Winslet recalled.

Kate Winslet, who plays the Na’vi Ronal in Avatar: The Way of Water, told the press that she only tried to hold her breath for 7 minutes and 15 seconds to break Tom Cruise’s record. “I want to break my own record of 6 minutes and 14 seconds. And I broke that record by more than a minute,” Kate Winslet confessed.
