Peter Adams used to work as a zookeeper at Calderpark Zoo, in Glasgow. Here he shared some special moments with an Asian elephant he cared for almost 20 years.
From 1970s to 1987, the two were connected by a special bond as they met daily. However, when Kirsty was moved away, Adams lost her track. But only to find out she’s now living in Germany. Excited to know she is still alive, the former zookeeper arranged a meeting with his old friend.
Mr. Adams wasn’t sure he will be recognized by Kirsty, but he soon realized it’s otherwise, when the elephant welcomed him with a warm big hug.
“Of course, I was wondering if there was any truth to the phrase “elephants never forget. That she allowed me to get close and accepted me was a very emotional experience for me. I will always keep that memory in my heart,” Mr. Adams said.
According to her current zookeeper, the elephants are recognizing the people they’ve been interacted with by the sound of their voice. The Scotsman declared he will now try to visit her old friend as much as possible.
At her current home, Kirsty is described as “intelligent and willing to learn but also dominant over members of her species”.
“After a colourful life with several moves around European zoos she has found her retirement retreat with us,” the man who’s taking care of her, said.
