One of the coaching staff in charge of selecting the players for tryouts named Néstor Gonçalves approached Federico, saying;
” Hey boy! Why don’t you come play? Play! “.

Hearing that, the proud mother walked up to Néstor Gonçalves and said: ‘ Fede, the person you are talking about is my son ‘.

Joining Peñarol helped him progress faster, earning him national recognition during his teenage years. Within two years of joining them, the rising star got a call-up to Uruguay’s U15 national youth team.
Meet an idol:
During the 2015–2016 season, while at the Peñarol academy, Fede met his hero Diego Forlan who joined the club’s senior team on 10 September 2015. The Uruguayan legend, who is about to retire, has served as a father figure to him.

Before long, a rising Federico graduated from the academy and joined his idol in the club’s senior team. Mentoring did not only bring success to Federico Valverde.

However, winning the individual Premier Division title has put him under the radar of a host of European clubs.
