If anything ever happens to Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend, Patrick Mahomes will be the one to kick the ball away. That’s a real thing … according to the two-time NFL MVP and Kansas City special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
After learning the news, former NFL star JJ Watt wants video evidence that Mahomes can actually punt. Don’t we all, JJ?
On Thursday, Toub told reporters that Mahomes was, in fact, the team’s backup punter behind Townsend. That prompted the quarterback to take to X, saying, “I been trying to tell yall!!!!”
Watt then saw the news and responded to the quarterback’s tweet.
“We got 6,000 videos of you throwing no-look darts and 70-yarders in pregame, yet not one single punt on film?!” Watt said. Mahomes responded with the comment, “Waiting for the right moment! Patience is key!”
You can’t convince us that Mahomes staying on the field in a fourth-down situation wouldn’t drive a defensive coordinator crazy. He’s already capable of making just about every play imaginable, and now he’s on the field for special teams?
Kansas City should try it sometime just to see if an opponent burns a timeout. And so Watt and the rest of us can see if Mahomes actually has the leg to be a serviceable punter in the NFL.
Patrick Mahomes interested in owning NFL team
There are still a lot of years left in Patrick Mahomes’ NFL career. The two-time league MVP and Super Bowl champion has a chance to be one of the all-time greats.
But when he does finally decide to retire, Mahomes said he does have interest in a different aspect of the sport. Ownership.
“Eventually, when I’m done playing,” Mahomes said of his interest in NFL ownership, via ESPN. “I think Tom [Brady] is trying to do it right now, but that’s definitely where you want to get to. I love this sport and want to give back in any way possible. When I’m done playing, obviously I’ll be a Chiefs fan, but at the same time I want to have that competitive edge I’ve always had my entire life.”
Mahomes added he would have interest in owning teams in other leagues should opportunities come available.
“I’m always looking around,” Mahomes said. “I can’t do it in the NFL while I’m playing, so I’m always looking around at other sports. It’s hard to get in all sports, NBA and all that different type of stuff, but I’m always keeping my ears open. If they give me the opportunity, I’m going to jump at it.”
