Nestled within the confines of Bihar, Telhara’s excavation endeavors have sparked a resurgence of interest, reminiscent of the famed Nalanda and Vikramshila discoveries.
Initiated on December 29, 2009, the Telhara project has steadily revealed its treasures, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Over 1,000 remarkable artifacts have emerged from the depths of more than 30 trenches, each bearing testament to a rich tapestry of civilizations. Among these finds are seals and sealings, crafted from red sandstone, black stone, or the enigmatic blue basalt. Statues of Buddha, as well as various Hindu deities, stand as silent guardians of a forgotten legacy.
However, amidst this treasure trove, one discovery stands out—the revelation of a three-storied structure, a prayer hall, and a grand platform capable of accommodating over 1,000 monks or students of Mahayana Buddhism. These architectural marvels hint at Telhara’s potential as a center of profound learning, akin to its renowned counterparts, Nalanda and Odantpuri, during the illustrious reigns of the Gupta and Pala empires.
The significance of Telhara is further underscored by the uncanny resemblance of its terracotta monastery seals to those found at Nalanda, offering compelling evidence of its educational prowess. Indeed, it was the unearthing of a similar monastery seal that solidified Nalanda University’s historical standing.
